Providing advice and insight to the Board and C-suite, the Chief Legal Officer (CLO) reports to the Chief Operating Officer and leads a team of legal and compliance professionals. The Legal Affairs department supports BCI in meeting the investment needs of its clients by providing legal and compliance advice, supporting transactional, investment and operational activities. Team members advise on contractual, legal and regulatory requirements, monitor compliance with regulatory, investment market and policies as well as handle corporate secretarial and governance activities.

The successful candidate will be called or eligible to be promptly called to the Law Society of British Columbia. The ideal candidate will have served as General Counsel or Deputy General Counsel with a Canadian pension fund, investment management firm, asset manager, Canadian bank or other institutional investor, with preference given to candidates with experience working in an in-house setting managing an internal legal and compliance staff. The ideal CLO has a background in general corporate and securities laws, familiarity with cross-border and international deal transactions, and management of stakeholder relations including entities with a government nexus. Experience managing professional and other legal staff is required as is working to budget on engaging global external legal advisors.
