Role and Responsibilities
Our client is seeking a bilingual (English and French) paralegal to join its Office of General Counsel (OGC) at the corporate headquarters in Oakville. The successful candidate will review, assess and respond to consumer demands; manage small claims court litigation across Canada; act as company representative in the small claims court in Quebec; and provide support to Legal Counsel in French litigation matters.
The successful candidate must work well in a team, working collaboratively in a matrixed organization. Sound judgment is essential as this role will require negotiation when appropriate and the successful candidate will be the company’s representative in Quebec small claims matters.
The ability to perform under pressure, meet strict deadlines and handle conflicting priorities is essential. While the role will function as part of the broader OGC team, the successful candidate will have to demonstrate confidence working independently, particularly when appearing at mediations, hearings and trials.
The role will require travel to Quebec.
Reporting into Legal Counsel, responsibilities will include:
- Reviewing, assessing and responding to consumer demands (from both individuals and their lawyers) across Canada, coordinating with an independent franchised dealer network and Credit department as required;
- Providing strategic advice and assistance to the Customer Relationship Centre when confronted with potential consumer legal issues or threats of consumer litigation;
- Managing small claims court litigation in all jurisdictions, including instructing outside counsel and attending mandatory appearances such as settlement conferences or mediations; and
- Representing the Company in Quebec small claims court matters, including preparing contestations, and participating in mediations, hearings and trials as the Company representative.
Basic Qualifications
- Licensed paralegal in good standing with Law Society of Ontario
- At least 5 years working experience in a law firm, legal services provider and/or in-house legal department, including appearing in court
- Excellent language and communication skills (written and verbal) in both English and French
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience in automotive industry and/or handling consumer claims is strongly preferred
